THEY WERE SOLDIERS; How the wounded return from America’s wars… the untold story
By Ann Jones, 2013 Haymarket Books, Chicago, IL
Ann Jones has been embedded with U.S. forces in the Middle East, and has written a number of non-fiction books about the wars. This one looks at the journey of America’s wounded, from the “M*A*S*H” –type unit to the hospital, the flight to a hospital in Germany, through the rehab process until they are ready to come back to the States. She visits Walter Reed Hospital after the scandal brought upgrades, and interviews vets and their families after they return home. This is not a book the military recruiters will recommend, but it is one every young person who is considering enlisting should read. To fully appreciate what our brave young people are experiencing, or risking, this book is a must!
